New-driver rules in Indiana

Indiana issues learner's permits at 15 to students enrolled in a BMV-licensed driver education program and at 16 otherwise. Before licensure — at 16 with driver education or 16 years, 270 days without — an applicant must hold the permit at least 180 days and log 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night. Licenses issued before age 21 are probationary: for the first 180 days no driving between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and no passengers without a qualifying front-seat adult (immediate family excepted), a night curfew applies until 18, and phone use is barred except 911 calls.
